Visiting tips

It's essential to make the distinction between the Cité de Carcassonne (the fortified medieval village, free admission) and the Château Comtal and its ramparts (fee-paying visit).

Tips to avoid the crowds

For the greatest tranquillity, choose the period from November to February. For the best weather/crowd ratio, aim for April, June, September or October. Avoid May, July and August if you can. Weekdays are significantly less crowded, especially on Tuesdays. For the best experience, arrive as soon as it opens, so you can enjoy the site with very few people. A late afternoon visit (after 3:30 p.m.) is also an excellent option to avoid the mid-day peak.
